More G.I.Joe Character Shots *Updated Info*

I actually had most of these last month but Paramount had other blogs that posted them "cease and desist." Now as you know I'm afraid of no one and I have a major arsenal of high tech weaponary, but there's no way I could withstand the onslaught of a Paramount Lawyer after seeing what happened to those good people who posted pictures of Optimus Prime 2 years ago. Ouch!

We've already seen Snake Eyes and Scarlett, so here are some of the other character shots for the forthcoming G.I.Joe movie.

(Left) Ripcord (Marlon Wayans of Scary Movie and White Chicks)

(Right) Heavy Duty (Adewale Akinnuoye -Agbaj of Lost and Oz)

(Left) Breaker (Saïd Taghmaoui of Vantage Point and Sleeper Cell)

(Right) Duke (Channing Tatum - Star of Step Up and Stop Loss)

(Left) General Hawk (Dennis Quaid)

(Right) The Baroness (Seinna Miller)

(Below) Destro (Christopher Eccleston of Dr. Who fame)

(Below) Storm Shadow (Byung-hun Lee of Hero)

As you can see, these do not look like the comic-book characters and toys you grew up with. Why, because this needs at least some foundation in realism. You can't have a covert counter-terrorist unit on a modern battlefield wearing whatever they wanted, it's fine for cartoon or comic-book land but not in a live action picture. It wouldn't have even worked for the X-Men either, that's why they had uniforms. The military use body armour and uniforms, deal with it. There are a lot of nay-sayers "complaining" about the look of the characters already, these are the same imbiciles who complained about the aforementioned Optimus Prime having flames painted on him. ALL of those people fell silent once the movie became the greatest of the decade. I'm sure they'll be proved just as wrong when G.I.Joe is released in Aug 2009.

The End Of An Era - So Long Bertie!

One of the greatest and most memorable periods in Irish political history came to an end on Tuesday as the last of the great Charlie Haughy's cabinet, An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern today tendered his resignation after 11 years in office, which made him one of Europe's longest-serving leaders.

Bertie handed in his seal of office to President McAleese after spending his final day in the post at the site of the historic Battle of the Boyne. He joined outgoing Northern Ireland First Minister Ian Paisley for the joint opening of the iconic Battle of the Boyne site in Co. Louth. The site has been developed by Bertie's government as a reconciliation project, helping to forge a friendship between Bertie and Paisley and thaw relations between unionists and nationalists on the island.

Paisley, who is also stepping down later this month after decades at the turbulent frontline of Northern Irish politics said he believed Bertie would make a good Irish president. "I think that probably he will be a candidate for the presidency," he told RTE radio. "After all he has done he deserves to be the president of the country."

Bertie was elected Taoiseach in 1997 and won three successive general elections as head of a coalition government overseeing an unprecedented decade-long economic boom, earning long-ailing Ireland the "Celtic Tiger" moniker.

Along with then British prime minister Tony Blair, he helped seal the landmark 1998 Good Friday agreement for Northern Ireland. The peace accord steered the province away from decades of violence between Protestants and Catholics and led to the restoration of a power-sharing administration in Belfast one year ago Thursday.

Before handing in his resignation, Ahern said his contribution to a peace deal that largely ended three decades of violence in neighbouring Northern Ireland was his "proudest achievement."

"I thank God that we have closed the bloody chapters in our history and opened a new book of reconciliation and renewal," Bertie wrote in The Irish Times newspaper. He also called for the Irish to vote "Yes" to the European Union's key Lisbon Treaty in a June 12 referendum, which will provide the incoming Taoiseach Brian "Biffo" Cowen with his first major test in office.

There is also speculation that Bertie might run for the post of EU president -- which would be created by the Lisbon Treaty. He will remain as head of the government formally until later today, Cowen will be elected his successor in the Dail. Bertie is also expected to hand over the Top-Secret Irish section of the UNETIDA "Go-Codes" to Lieutenan Colonel "Whopper" Creedon before Biffo assumes control.

IRON MAN - Full Review

You wait 2o years for something like an Iron Man movie to become a reality and when it finally does and exceeds your expectations - the rush is incredible.

Jon Favreau seemed the most unlikely director for a multi-million Marvel movie, the first that the Comic book publisher would fund and produce itself. There was a lot riding on this; they took a big gamble and now it's paid off.

IRON MAN ROCKS!!!

Favreau selected key points, character's and events from Tony Stark and Iron Man's comic book past, reformed it in his own way and recreated an origin story using celluloid magic. He proved that he was a serious fan and was very faithful to the 40 year history of the character.

The characters are a hodgepodge collection from the comic books, Pepper Potts and Happy Hogan, Stark's PA and Driver respectively from the 70's comics played most satisfactorily by Gwyneth Paltrow and Jon Favreau himself. Obidiah Stane, the villain of the piece from the 80's run played by a smooth headed Jeff Bridges an even a cameo from The Ultimate version of Nick Fury from this decades books run played by Samuel L. Jackson. Terence Howard delivers a good performance as Rhodey but Robert Downey Jr. drink-in-hand with spot-on comic timing steals the show pulling of a 100% perfect performance as Anthony Stark who as a care-free playboy, gets the wake-up call of a lifetime.

All of the $186m it took to make this movie is on the screen, it's impossible to tell where Stan Winston's recreation of Adi Granov's Iron Man armour design stops and the CGI begins. The music is an exceptional work of art in itself being delivered by Ramin Djawadi and they even worked in a jazzed up version the old Iron Man cartoon theme!

It's not a fault, but this movie is obviously just the first of what I'm sure Marvel hope to be a long franchise with obvious allusions towards The Mandarin "hidden" in the name of the terrorist organisation and Rhodey's eye catching the Mark II armor which by little stretch of the imagination could be War Machine. But it's Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D.'s appearance here (and Tony Stark's appearance in the forthcoming The Incredible Hulk) that has the most ramifications for a glorious future of dozens of interconnected Marvel movies that take place in the same universe - the world will never be the same now that Marvel have full control over their own productions.

Final Verdict: On the strength of his debut movie, Iron Man has been catapulted to the top place in a long line of Marvel movies, surpassing in greatness even 2nd sequels to Blade, X-Men and even Spider-Man. It's quite simply the greatest Marvel Super Hero Movie ever.

I've seen Iron Man!

I've no time to collect my thoughts on this now, my mind is racing from seeing this incredible movie and I'm suffering from lack of sleep from being so excited. I wanna see it again! My review later will be positive.

For those who are going to see it this weekend: Stay until after the end credits for the cameo I spoke of last June for a "warning" about the Marvel movies of the future!

OMG!!! Iron Man a mere 2.5 hours away!!!!

*rocks back and forth dribbling*

His Excellency: Bertie Ahern

I'll admit I laughed when House Speaker Nanci Pelosi introduced the "THAY-shock" (LOL - Bloody Democrats) Bertie Ahern as "His Excellency"? Lucas! Heh! I'm still laughing. Bertie? But seriously, is Bertie not excellent? of course he is!

"His Excellency" proceeded to give the greatest speech of his career, one of his presumed final acts on the world stage. He hailed ties between Ireland and the United States and looked back on the peace he helped craft in Northern Ireland. "After decades of conflict, I am so proud to be the first Irish leader to inform the United States Congress that Ireland is at peace," he said.

Bertie spoke at a joint meeting of the Senate and House of Representatives, he said Ireland and the United States have a relationship forged by generations of Irish immigrants. "To be an Irishman among Americans is to be at home," he said.

[Left: Lt.Colonel "Whopper" Creedon listening intently as living history is made]

Bertie is widely credited with helping to achieve the Good Friday peace accord of 1998 for the neighboring British territory of Northern Ireland and for overseeing the longest economic expansion in Ireland's history.

The Taoiseach was to meet President Bush on Wednesday afternoon as well. That visit comes barely a month after he was last in the White House to meet the Commander In Chief for St. Patrick's Day.

Bertie also will be guest of honor at a congressional lunch hosted by the Friends of Ireland group in the House of Representatives.

Less than 48 Hours to go! - Why Iron Man is my favourite comic-book hero

I think with the whole Iron Man buzz in the air at the moment, the time is right to publish this, something I began writing when the first rumours of an Iron Man movie were surfacing more than 2 years ago now. Someone asked me who my favourite comic-book character was, it wasn't a quick answer but I had to say that it was Iron Man. Most people expect Batman or even Spider-Man, many would presume someone more 'military' like a G.I.Joe character or The Punisher or those who know who he is; Nick Fury. No, while I've read and enjoyed many of their adventures, Iron Man is my firm-favourite comic book character.

So up until pretty recently most non comic-book oriented folk had little or no idea who Iron Man was. Allow me to explain:

Anthony 'Tony' Stark inherited his fathers arms company after his parents were killed in a motor-vehicle accident. The young Stark founded a cosy little Empire and by the time of the Vietnam War he was supplying the US Military with then state-of-the-art weaponry. He kept a very hands-on approach to his business and even traveled to Vietnam in '68 to advise the military on the use of his weapons systems. Unfortunately during this visit there was a Viet-Cong attack and an unfortunate explosion left a piece of shrapnel dangerously close to his heart. He was captured by the VC and was instructed to create weapons for them instead. Stark designed, built and constructed a metal torso which sent light electrical pulses to his heart to keep it beating. It was cumbersome and he had to wear it for a few hours each day and it had to be recharged after use which took a while. He then had the idea to create an entire suit of armour with the capability to fly and have built in weapon systems. Thankfully the VC generously allowed him to build this under their noses and so he did, and promptly escaped from his captors with one of the most powerful weapons in the world- the Iron Man armour.

Stark founded a multi-million dollar engineering and electronics company Stark International. Stark himself was naturally CEO and he cast Iron Man in the role of his personal bodyguard which was a good cover story as Iron Man obviously made frequent appearances in the vicinity of Stark, especially when he or someone was in trouble. Stark lost his company after falling foul of alcohol, it was bought out by Obidiah Stane a rival manufacturer. Once Stark began the road to recovery he uprooted all he had left and and moved everything lock stock and barrel to the West Coast and settled in California's Silicon Valley. There he founded Stark Enterprises and soon the company had grown 10 times what his previous company was, making Stark one of the richest men in the world.

Stark had very few close relationships with anyone, but one man who stood by him throughout most of his adventures was James "Rhody" Rhodes a US Air Force pilot whom was shot down and interred at the same POW camp where Stark created Iron Man. Stark helped him escape and he has been his personal pilot and general right-hand man ever since. Rhody knows Stark is Iron Man and has worn the armour himself many times especially during a two year period when Stark was addicted to alcohol and in no condition to operate the armour. During times where Stark and Iron Man needed to be in two places at once (or indeed the same place both as Stark and Iron Man), then Rhody was Iron Man. Rhody now wears the War-Machine armour; an ultra-powerful combat suit with more firepower than a US Marine Expeditionary Unit.

No hero would be complete without nemeses; Some of his more difficult foes have included, The Living Laser, Doctor Doom, Titanium Man, The Crimson Dynamo and Fing Fang Foom. Through various circumstances he's also gone up against The Incredible Hulk and S.H.I.E.L.D. Out of all the villains Iron Man has faced over the years however, none have been more dangerous to him than The Mandarin. Of Asian descent this madman held power over 10 magical rings, each with a unique ability that spell doom for Iron Man.

As with most comic-books over the years there has been some retconning, which was used to alter historical facts fit the approximate age of the character in present day. As Tony Stark is perpetually in his mid 30's, he obviously couldn't have been captured during the Vietnam War 40 years ago. Thankfully the US was engaged in another war when Iron Man rebooted a few years ago and it was alluded to that Stark was injured in Afghanistan and captured by Al-Qaeda, facts that Director Jon Favreau has adopted for the movie.

Later, I will recount for you my earliest memories of Iron Man and a brief history of the Comic Book itself and what I've learned from reading it.

Street Kings: L.A. Confidential on Viagra!

Keanu Reeves delivers the worst performance of his career in this new Thriller / Crime-Drama from David Ayer. It's really distracting to have the main actor not giving it the best up there on screen, it translates into not giving a flying fuck about the character and hoping that he buys it in some "everybody dies" scenario as in The Departed or something. Can we really blame him or is it the fault of inexperienced director Ayer? Well you be the judge when you see how good Forest Whitaker, Hugh Laurie (complete with House yank accent) and even Chris Evans are in their respective roles.

It may come as no surprise to anyone watching this movie, that it's written by James Ellroy, the acclaimed novelist behind L.A. Confidential. It may also dawn on people that Mr. Ellroy is a one-trick-pony as there are many elements of his previous works on display here. This time however the corrupt cop genre has been given a boost with some real edgy dialog and fantastic action set-pieces. The latter element there would no doubt be the result of additional screenplay input by the excellent Kurt Wimmer of Equilibrium and Ultraviolet fame. As mentioned, the movie is directed by David Ayer who is more credited as a writer of S.W.A.T., Dark Blue and Training Day which strangely enough ALL heavily feature corrupt cops too! I think even Ayer's choice of composer in Graeme Revell was most likely for his ability to score movies about corrupt cops as he did a good job of adapting some of his previous scores from Assault on Precinct 13 and The Negotiator for this movie.

There is this one part in the movie that I must mention because it should be shocking, but ends up being fucking hilarious. A character gets gunned down by two bad guys with (what look like MK 760) machine guns. About 100 9mm bullets end up lodging in or going through the poor guy, his chest cavity is a gaping hole and he has several wounds in his head, there is little of him left - but in true Hollywood fashion: He's still breathing when his assailants leave. Keanu finds him, bends over and says "Stay With Me!". It's just too funny. It's actually in the trailer below, have a look.

Brian Holcomb of Beyond Hollywood said that "..movies like Street Kings are sitting ducks in a shooting range for film critics who laugh all through the movie only to condemn it for being so damn entertaining." And this is true; Despite it's flaws the movie is most certainly entertaining and enjoyable, even if it does add to a somewhat disheartening portrait of the LAPD, ironically painted by the very people they're sworn to serve and protect.

G.I.Joe - Scarlett

If G.I. Joe's Scarlett was a blond or a brunette I'd be typing furiously away like some nerdy fanboy on the IMDB complaining that the film-makers were ruining my childhood because they haven't put her in her traditional blue and gold costume (seriously blue and gold on a battlefield?), but no: Scarlett is and always will be a redhead and instead I'll just sit here and dribble like some disgusting pervert.
Incidently, she's wearing a Crysis - style nanosuit which amps up her physical abilities a bit. Heh, I can certainly think of one or two... :)

I want planes with frikkin' laser-beams on their noses!

It may sound like one of those ridiculous requests made by Dr. Evil of his henchmen in the Austin Powers movies, but this is exactly what Colonel "Whopper" Creedon asked for when the Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee asked what the Marine needed for the United Nations Extra Terrestrial Defence Agency (UNETIDA) to protect the planet. 5 Years on and Colonel Creedon's request does not sound so ridiculous anymore as the Department of Defense (DOD) has created a prototype of an aircraft furnished with a laser weapon dubbed the Airborne Tactical Laser (ATL), that could potentially annihilate armoured vehicles 15Km away.

Under the program, a chemical oxygen-iodine laser (COIL) is installed on a modified C-130H more commonly known at the "Hercules" transport aircraft, simulating a future AC-130 laser equipped gunship. The ATL will be able to disable, damage and if necessary destroy targets at tactical ranges with little or no collateral damage, supporting battlefield missions and Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT). The laser will be able to place a 10-centimeter-wide beam with enough energy to melt and slice through a metal target from a distance of 15 kilometers.

ATL is expected to produce scalable effects, meaning the weapon operator will be able to select the amplitude and nature of the damage done to a target by choosing a specific aim-point and duration such as, targeting a vehicles fuel tank to destroy it or just it's tire to disable the vehicle but keep the occupants alive.

So far the laser itself has not been tested in flight, but first trials are expected during 2008. One obvious future potential ATL platform could be MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft.

Captain "Harpoon" Dutton KBE, Commander of UNETIDA Naval Tactical Support (CUNTS) is quoted as saying "I'll need some of these!"

Replicating Rapid-prototyper could destroy us all!

I got an E-mail from a colleague of mine who often keeps an eye out for threats to our way of life, being aware as I am, of the inherent dangers of "the future".

Now I don't want to come across as a doomsayer, but this seemingly innocent piece of technology on the left, could pave the way for the total destruction of the human race.

Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) was in it's infancy when I was in college but never did I think that it could have evolved into this monster: - a machine that can replicate itself!

Fair enough, it can only replicate about 25% of it's total parts, but that's only 75% away from total replication. It's obvious it's designers are not aware of similar alien technology or the potential for it to be used by a suprcomputer to replicate war machines to annihilate humanity.

Mark my words: This will all end in tears and once again I'll have to don a flak-jacket and shoot my way out of another mess created by people with a lack of true vision!

Chuck Heston Dead at 84

The legendary Charlton "Chuck" Heston, one of the greatest screen actors or all time, has died at 84.

A former US Army Air Force Radio Gunner, Heston was known for his chiseled jaw, broad shoulders, resonating voice and the iconic historical roles he played; among them: Moses, El Cid, John the Baptist, Michelangelo, Marc Antony, Cardinal Richelieu and Henry VIII. His greatest role however was that of Ben Hur. He is also known for his portrayal of the tycoon Jason Colby in a spin off from Dynasty, the narrator for Michael Bay's Armageddon and as Colonel George Taylor in Planet Of The Apes.

The actor was an excellent leader off the silver screen too. He served as president of the Screen Actors Guild and chairman of the American Film Institute. In later years he grew more conservative, campaigned for conservative candidates and in '98, Heston was elected president of the National Rifle Association, for which he had posed for ads holding a rifle. He delivered a well-deserved jab at the adulterous then-President Clinton, saying, "America doesn't trust you with our 21-year-old daughters, and we sure, Lord, don't trust you with our guns."

(Left): "From my cold dead hand"

In 2003 President Bush awarded Heston the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor. "The largeness of character that comes across the screen has also been seen throughout his life," Bush said at the time. In late years, Heston drew as much publicity for his crusades as for his performances. In addition to his NRA work, he campaigned for Republican presidential and congressional candidates and against affirmative action.

At a Time Warner stockholders meeting, he castigated the company for releasing an Ice-T album that purportedly encouraged cop killing. Heston wrote in "In the Arena" that he was proud of what he did "though now I'll surely never be offered another film by Warners, nor get a good review in Time. On the other hand, I doubt I'll get a traffic ticket very soon."

Heston's family said in a statement. "No one could ask for a fuller life than his. No man could have given more to his family, to his profession, and to his country."

A Dark Day for Ireland

It is with a tear filled eye that I regretfully announce that our great leader Bertie Ahern will be stepping down as Taoiseach, Prime Minister of Ireland.

Bertie, almost a living saint, has had to duck and dodge a barrage of personal attacks on him and his finances over many months. And like a true hero he had decided to fall on his sword, to protect his party, the government and our nation from the treasonous actions of the opposition.

In a general election last year, the people of Ireland spoke up in a solid voice that they didn't mind who gave him money or what the hell he does with it as long as he would continue to lead our nation as he had done in the previous decade.

However, ignoring the voice of the people they claim to represent, the traitors in opposition government continued to put a negative spin on the origins of some small amounts (to politicians) of cash that poor Bertie had away for a rainy day. This constant aggressive assault on a national hero, the greatest leader since C.J. Haughey eroded his famous "Teflon" coating and destroyed his political will.

But Bertie will have the last laugh, as someone said to me, "he'll rise from the ashes in some alternate form" (maybe even President Bertie?) but one thing is for sure: His place in history is secure as a bringer of peace to Northern Ireland and much more, whereas Enda Kenny and Eamonn Gillmore's most valuable contributions to history will only be their photographs beside the Oxford Dictionary terms "Smarmy Little Fucker" and "Semi-retarded Gobshite" respectively.

Vader "unimpressed" with Jedi Church

Jedi Master Jonba Hehol of Holyhead - was giving a TV interview in his back garden when an individual, dressed in a black bin-bag and wearing a Darth Vader helmet, leapt over his garden fence.

Armed with a metal crutch and apparently under the influence of alcohol; the would-be Sith Lord proceeded to lay about his opponent, whose Jedi powers failed against the sheer might of Vader and he was subdued. Vader then turned his attention to the camera crew and a hairdresser.

Master Hehol, a 36 year old hairdresser (born Barney Jones) who founded the first-ever British Jedi Church with his brother Daniel, was shocked. "This wasn't a joke. This was serious."

Police are now investigating and do want to question this "gentleman":

The 3rd Annual Whopper Awards! ***WINNERS***

And now the moment you've been waiting patiently for 24 hours for:

Best Actor In A Dramatic Role:

Ashraf Barhom
(The Kingdom)

That's right, Israeli actor Ashraf Barhom is the winner of the first coveted Whopper Award this year. In The Kingdom, portraying Colonel Faris Al Ghazi, he effortlessly out acted Oscar winners Jamie Foxx and Chris Cooper. Cooper himself incidentally was just pipped to the Whopper for his role in Breach by Barhom.

Best Actor In An Action Role:

Gerard Butler
(300)

"Tonight! We dine in HELL!"

Best Actress In A Dramatic Role:

Lena Headey
(300)

As Queen Gorgo in 300, the Spartan queen as deadly as she is beautiful; British actress Lena Headey delivered an intoxicating performance that outshone her peers in this category.

Best Actress For Just Being Hot:

Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil Extinction)

Best Supporting Actor:

Samuel L. Jackson
(1408)

"It's just an evil fuckin' room!" Only the great Sam Jackson can show up in a movie for 10 minutes, grab the best line in the script and walk out with a paycheck with his head held high knowing he's sill as cool as Shaft!

Best Supporting Actress:
Lauren Holly (NCIS)

Foremost because as NCIS Director Jenny Shepard she can play a woman of power and convincingly portray someone who can keep a former USMC Gunny like Gibbs in check. Not necessarily because she's a redhead and still super hot at 44.

Best Director:
Michael Bay (Transformers)

"Awesome!"

Below is the awesome special extended edition of the "Awesome" Verizon advertisement.

Best Score:

Steve Jablonsky
(Transformers)

"Poor is the student who cannot surpass his master" is phrase I use when a Marine shoots better than I on the rifle range. Eventually someone will come along and break the records you set or do a better job than you could ever do, especially when you train them right. In 2007 Hans Zimmer had two fantastic scores, The Simpsons Movie and Pirates Of The Caribbean: At Worlds End, the latter of which was also nominated. However even the magnificent talent borne by Zimmer paled in comparison to the range of themes and musical emotion crafted by Steve Jablonsky whose knowledge was bestowed by Zimmer himself.

Listen to some of the score samples here at Amazon.com.

Best Dramatic Motion Picture:

The Bourne Ultimatum

Some folk may frown and call foul at the idea that a Bourne movie is a drama and you'd be right, it's more of a thriller however a chase thriller if you want to further categorise it into a sub-genre. However as it has a far more complex plot than a simplistic Action Movie (see below) and I have only three categories for best film, I'm going to lump Bourne's perfectly crafted 3rd outing into this category. Shut-up! They're my awards! I hope this is the end for Bourne as few trilogies end as perfectly as this movie.

Best Action Movie:

300

"THIS -- IS -- SPARTA!"

Special Note: I deliberately removed Transformers from the running as I have already declared it "The Greatest Movie Of The Decade", and so cannot be confined to an accolade for a single year.

Best Comedic Motion Picture:

Hot Fuzz

I preferred this to Shaun of The Dead as I prefer a Cop movie to a Zombie movie. Hot Fuzz is almost more homage than spoof and it works, it's funnier and all the better for it. Edgar Wright excellently crafted a buddy cop movie set in rural England and made it hilarious. Timothy Dalton makes a much better bad guy than a Bond, that's for sure.

Best Foreign Language Movie:

Letters From Iwo Jima

This was a hard one to pick as Days of Glory was so brilliant (and anti-french), but the second half of Clint Eastwood's spectacular Word War II masterpiece really does deserve the Whopper. Told from the perspective of the Japanese; it completes the saga begin in Flags of our Fathers as a whole entity showing both sides of the conflict in a historical context. Most impressive.

Best Television Show:

The Unit

Combining the most realistic military action scenes with what some call home-front soap-opera drama seemed like such a dumb idea to my 2IGTV Co-host Mark, that he was full sure it wouldn't last the first 13 episodes. The writers strike cut the current season short but the series stands at 34 episodes more than Mark original prediction. The series was created by David Mamet and features Denis Haysbert as Sergeant Major Jonas Blane. It's one of the few shows on television which has consistently and steadily improved with age. Long may it continue.

Best Video Game:

Neverwinter Nights 2

Even my love of John Woo or Tom Clancy couldn't topple this epic adventure from the top spot as my best gaming experience of FY07. The technical advances that have taken place in PC Gaming, and the RPG genre in particular are staggering when you compare this masterpiece to it's predecessor. I'm literally itching to play the expansion pack sitting on my shelf.

Best Special Effects:

Flyboys

Justs goes to show that you don't need hundreds of millions of dollars to convince someone what's on screen is real. The aerial combat here was the best I've ever seen in a movie. Top Gun is long forgotten now.

Best DVD:

Die Hard 4.0

Dialog as heard in cinema:
"Yippie Ki-Yay Mother-"*SOUND OF GUNSHOT DROWNS OUT END OF PHRASE*

Dialog as heard on DVD:
"Yippie Ki-Yay MotherFUCKER"

If this happens again, I'll consider not returning to the cinema. Don't mess with a screen legend's dialog.

Special Whopper Awards go to:

300 for Best Trailer Representing a 2007 Release

Iron Man for Best Teaser Trailer of 2007

Shoot ‘Em Up for Most Glorified use of Automatic Weaponry

Smokin' Aces for Best Choreographed Automatic Weaponry scene

300 for Most Delightful Use of Edged Weaponry

30 Days Of Night for Best Gore

War for Best Martial Arts

Die Hard 4.0 for Best Pyrotechnics

Special Mentions:

28 Weeks Later for use of Helicopter Rotor Blades to chop up moving Zombies.

I Am Legend for giving me the idea of hiding an M4 in an umbrella stand.

The Worst Movie of 2007
The Invasion

Yes, there was something even worse than Spider-Man 3.

The Worst Performance of 2007
Gina Holden for Flash Gordon

She's so awful it eclipses her hotness. Seriously, watch her I dare you.

That's it until 2009 folks...

Please note the absence of Best Writing and Best Cinematography from the previous Whopper Awards is not an error; the efforts of writing were sub par this year and so do not deserve to be awarded and I haven't a fucking clue what Cinematography really is so I don't think my opinion is valid on that particular subject.

*Rules: The 3rd Whopper Awards awards the entertainment industry with a worthless accolade for producing the "best" work released from Jan 1st 2007 to Dec 31st 2007 (and for FY07 (October 1st 2006 to September 30th 2007 for the interactive entertainment industry).

October Date for Quantum

Despite there being massive press coverage that 07 November 2008 was to be the release date for Quantum of Solace, it appears that the UK date at least had been pushed forward as it was with Casino Royale in 2006!

The new date for the 22nd outing for Commander James Bond, the 2nd for Daniel Craig in the role of the British superspy is now October 31st; a week earlier!

A new (possibly titled Quantum Of Solace) James Bond video game was scheduled to appear in May for all platforms, the original release date for the movie but Activision, the new James Bond video game licence holders have pushed back the new game to coinside with the movie's release. Undoubtedly as with all games I'm sure it would benefit from some extra months in the "oven".

Other Quantum snippets:
Peter Lamont the production designer who worked on 18 previous Bond movies had retired and his position has been filled by Dennis Gassner.
Gadgets will be more plentiful than in Casino Royale but will be somewhat more realistic than the gadgets of old.
Amy Winehouse is currently the hottest tipped to sing the theme song.

A Bowl of Shamrock Between Friends

There's a great tradition in the White House on St. Patrick's Day. Our Taoiseach, in this case the great Bertie Ahern, (far from the treasonous antics of the whining muppets in opposition back in the Dáil) makes a journey to meet with the President of Freedom and Glory, in this case George W. Bush and presents him with a Waterford Crystal bowl of Shamrock. This year was the final year in which Bertie would present it to George but hopefully next year President McCain will uphold this great tradition.

Obituary: Arthur C. Clarke

The last of the big three* is no more. After prolific and esteemed career, Sir Arthur C. Clarke has passed away in Sri Lanka at age 90.

As a Science Fiction writer, Clarke was most famous for his novel 2001: A Space Odyssey and for collaborating with the insane director Stanley Kubrick on a crap movie adaptation.

Unfortunately, as his books were too long, I'll never read him, unless I'm confined to a stockade for a few years. However I'm only too aware of his contributions to modern science fiction including the influence he has obviously had over the likes of Lucas, Roddenberry, Speilberg and Straczynski.

Not all of Clarke's ideas are in the world of Sci-Fi. It was he who first theorised in 1945 that geostationary satellites would be ideal telecommunications relays. It was through his love of real science that gave a credibility and a believability to his writings unmatched by any other science fiction author.

I finish now with a quote from the man himself:
"How inappropriate to call this planet Earth, when clearly it is Ocean."

Bush all for Torture - This is a good thing!

It is with renewed admiration for the faultless policies of the Bush administration that I tell you that on Saturday President Bush vetoed a bill that would have banned the CIA from using simulated drowning and other coercive interrogation methods to gain information from suspected terrorists.

Bush said such tactics have helped foil terrorist plots such as the ones against a Marine camp in Djibouti, the U.S. consulate in Karachi, Pakistan, and plans to fly passenger planes into a Los Angeles tower or London's Heathrow Airport and city buildings.

The bill would have limited the CIA to 19 interrogation techniques that are used by the military and spelled out in the Army Field Manual. Bush said he vetoed the measure because it is important for the CIA to have a separate and classified interrogation program for suspected terrorists who possess critical information about possible plots against the United States. "Were it not for this program, our intelligence community believes that al-Qaida and its allies would have succeeded in launching another attack against the American homeland," the Commander in Chief said.

Bush said he did not veto the bill specifically over waterboarding, which the Army banned in 2006. The CIA, which also prohibited the practice in 2006, has acknowledged using waterboarding on three suspected terrorists in 2003. Waterboarding remains in the CIA's tool kit. The technique can be used, but it requires the consent of the attorney general and president on a case-by-case basis. Bush wants to keep that option open. "I cannot sign into law a bill that would prevent me, and future presidents, from authorizing the CIA to conduct a separate, lawful intelligence program, and from taking all lawful actions necessary to protect Americans from attack."

In a memo to CIA employees Saturday, CIA Director Michael Hayden said the Army Field Manual does not "exhaust the universe" of lawful interrogation techniques. "There are methods in the CIA's program that have been briefed to our oversight committees, are fully consistent with the Geneva Convention and current U.S. law and are most certainly not torture," Hayden wrote.

Lieutenant Colonel Creedon of the United Nations Extra Terrestrial Invasion Defense Agency said in an interview: "I remember being subjected to this at SERE school, I won't say it was great fun like the sensory deprivation test but the democrats and bleeding heart liberals only focus on the negative effects. They should try it and see why it's not all that bad." In a statement later The Colonel added that US forces working for UNETIDA are bound by US law only for the interrogation of homo-sapien prisoners and the majority of their work is unaffected by any such changes in law.
