Project: MAXXIMUS

As mentioned in 2IGTV Episode 35 I think it was, it's time for me to upgrade. As you can see from my list of pre-ordered games on the bottom of the right hand sidebar there is only now an incentive to upgrade as opposed to then. Stranglehold, Blacksite, Crisis and some others that have caught my attention will be winging their way to me to experience them on MAXXIMUS.

Maxximus is currently under construction (see picture) and will include features of an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU, 2Gb PC6400 Corsair RAM, an XFX 640Mb GeForce 8800GTS GPU and 2x 500Gb (1Tb) Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM SATA2 drives, output to an LG 24" 1920x1200 HD LCD.

Provided of course I can find my magnetic screwdriver.

And if it doesn't explode when I turn it on first :D

Expect a comprehensive update to the somewhat neglected VerTecX21 in due course.

Assembling it yourself. Where are the minions?

The Lt.Col shot them after the completion of his other black projects. To preserve his Technology secrets/incompetence.

So Lt.Col, what are you driving these days?

Anonymous said...

Ah yes, I remember you building your own machines.... I'll look for the black cloud over the northside when you plug it in. :)

There may not be a Northside anymore after the Lt.Col switches that beast on. P.S. I second my esteemed Colleague, the learned Sithy's excellent question. What pimped-up, ex miltary vehicle are you using to transport that Corpulent frame around this days, a tricked out Humvee?, a reconditioned Jerry Officer's Staff Car? Speak!

I never fail at anything and I will not be starting with Maxximus. Your words of encouragement are appreciated my friends.

The ColonelCar project was fully funded and scheduled to come online in January 2008. However the results of my Court martial suggested I use a less inactive mode of transport for the time being. Should my current assignment change overnight however, the funding for the vehicle, tax and insurance is still accessable next banking day if needed.

Do you have any suggestions as to what vehicle I should obtain (keeping in mind than an O-5 cannot afford to purchase an '07 Beamer, Merc or Hummer). Preferably I'd like to drive something that's deliberatly harmful to the enviornment in order to distance myself from Al Gore and his ilk but this requirement is not essential especially if it leads to more expense.

If you want something damaging to the environment, then the The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 is currently the fastest, most powerful, and most expensive street-legal full production car in the world.
The 1st two there are kinda like your PC requirements...
I particularly like the fact it can do 0 - 150mph in under 10 seconds.

You left out the fact that it's € 1,127,210. If I desired that insane speed and price in a PC I'd have purchased a Core 2 Quad Extreme Edition QX6850, PC2-8500 RAM, 4Tb Hard drives, Geforce 8800Ultra in SLI in a 24-Carat gold Case instead from from here. The price of that machine would be over €15,000 which is more than I'm intending to pay for a friggin' car!

If you're intending to buy in Jan '08, Whatever motor you go for, try for a "near new" or in mercenary talk, "high-end obosolete" 2007 model car, it'll have very low mileage and the first major depeciation (~3 grand, as soon as you drive a new car off the garage forecourt) will have hit the first owner not you. A good idea is to ask the CSO what is the most popular car with 65-70 year olds, There is a strategy to this, they car afford a brand new car with all the mod cons, don't drive much (low milleage) and often give up driving at this age, so they'll want rid of a motor in mint condition with all modcons and very low mileage. Alternatively or in addition to the above you could go for a car that the manufacturer has recently discontinued the model, Say, Toyota, replacing the Corolla with the Auris. A lot of garages will still have the older model in stock, so they'll be willing to significantly discount as they want rid of the older model.

Everyone knows at least one Petrolhead, seek yours out, mine gave me this advice when I was considering a Golf, "VWs tend to be overrated and expensive for what you get, take the Golf for example, the Ford Focus is in the same class and comes with a lot more features as standard with a much more attractive price tag.

Try the following link to get a good insurance quote if you are a first time driver, www.BrittonInsurance.com, they saved me a grand on my first years insurance.

Of course, pimping the motor to Bond Chic levels is up to you. ;)

so the new PC: can it play DOS-based games?

Declan said...

So Lt Col, hows the build going? Are you reading this on a new superfast machine or are you reading this via a printout from one of your friends? ;-)

Major General Creedon said...

@ Anonymous: I'm sure I could get some sort of emulator to create a DOS shell to play DOS games but there are memory and compatibility issues between DOS and my new-fangled components.
I have an easier solution however: I have always maintained a perfectly functional Deschutes based Windows'95 machine from the last century as one of the 4 working PC's I keep at all times. On this - I can play my old DOS games should the nostalgic mood overwhelm me at any time.

@ Declan: Everything is going fine. I've just migrated everything from my old Web/Office station to my old Gamestation now so I'll be updating from now on as normal.

Or you could just setup the emulation program Dosbox.

DOSbox is an emulator as discussed above and judging by it's own forums still has issues. I have no doubt I could set it up but why would I want the hassle of doing that and getting it to work when my old DOS capable system is right here and I know it works?
